So I tried: diskUtil eraseVolume HFS+ test disk1s1 where disk1s1 is the crappy u3 partition. Afterwards you might think you can do an eraseDisk, but this doesn't work! eraseDisk recreates (magically) this bloody u3 thing. But you can merge the disks ;-) : diskUtil mergePartitions force HFS+ temp disk1s1 disk1s2 Done! In my case it didn’t help. So I tried:

diskUtil eraseVolume HFS+ test disk1s1
